This structure intends to federate engineers and health professionals and managers for common achievements of new products, applied research and development, teaching or job creation.
The platform is maintained by the business and engineering school "Haute Ecole d’Ingénierie et de Gestion du canton de Vaud" (HEIG-VD) and health school "Haute Ecole de Santé Vaud" (HESAV), that are part of the University of Applied Science and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO).
The main goal of this platform is to federate the various trades of health, engineering and management in order to provide an optimal job framework for everyone. The framework also includes services suited for optimizing the collaboration between the different worlds.
The research and development projects carried out within the framework of the platform are achievements of the platform's actors. The Platform itself does not decide which projects are funded (it has no means of funding of its own for the time being), but it does support the development, implementation and publication of these projects by using the network of expertise at its disposal and by organising regular events at our two schools to present the achievements and further expand the circle of relations.
The platform intends to play an important role in relation to industry and medical and social-medical institutions by offering its skills and expertise for the implementation of mandates and for technology transfer. The platform's achievements are highly oriented towards applied research and are therefore immediately usable with a minimal process of industrialisation.
Bachelor
Master
Continuous learning
The HEIG-VD and the HESAV offer Bachelor's courses in the fields of HES-SO - Economics and Services and Engineering and Architecture as well as Health - in the following three modes of training: full-time (PT) over 6 semesters and in employment (EE) or part-time (TP) over 8 semesters.
A medium-term objective of this Engineering & Health platform is the development of coherent teaching in medical engineering. For example, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has estimated, in 2012, that several hundred medical IT engineers will be missing over the next few years. This shortfall cannot be compensated for by simple immigration and "on-the-job" training, as it is true that the increasingly complex problems involve the hiring of increasingly qualified personnel, and consequently require increasingly specialised training. This is true for IT, but it is also true for other engineering disciplines with applications in the medical field.
Conversely, the tools facing healthcare professionals are increasingly complex and sophisticated, and the knowledge required to handle them adequately is less and less trivial. A smartphone handled on a daily basis potentially contains a considerable amount of information, some of which may be confidential and subject to medical secrecy. It therefore seems inevitable, in the long term, to introduce awareness courses on this kind of issue in the regular education of nurses, midwives and other traditional health professions.
Without wishing to set itself objectives that are probably not very relevant in the current state of thinking, the Engineering & Health platform is seeking to promote partially joint teaching, possibly starting with bachelor's work bringing together students from both training courses in the same project.

Laura Elena Raileanu.
